Do you need an app or a better mobile website?
· 4 min read
Most businesses need a fast, well-built mobile website first, and only some need an app. An app pays off when the same customers come back often and want to do the same thing quickly each time, such as reorder a coffee, collect points or book the same class. If most of your visitors come once, look around and then call you, a good mobile website serves them better and costs far less.
What does a mobile website do that an app cannot?
A website opens the moment someone taps a link. They do not install anything, visit a store or create an account. Most people will not download an app from a business they have never bought from, so a new customer almost always meets you on your website first.
Google and AI assistants also read websites, not apps. When someone searches for a bakery nearby or asks an assistant to find a plumber, the results point to websites. If your site is slow or awkward on a phone, those people leave before they ever hear about your app.
A website also works for everyone at once. The same pages serve people on iPhones, Android phones, tablets and laptops, and you change them once when your hours, prices or menu change.
So the website is where most customers first judge your business. It needs to work well before anything else is worth building.
When is an app worth it?
An app starts to make sense when three things are true.
- Customers come back often. Weekly or more is a good sign. A cafe, a gym or a salon sees the same people again and again. A wedding photographer does not.
- They repeat the same task. Ordering the usual, checking points, booking the next slot. An app can remember who they are and cut that task down to a couple of taps.
- You can give them a reason to install it. Rewards, faster ordering, members-only offers or a saved card. People keep apps that save them time or money.
The Local by Masrawy is a cafe app we built. Regulars use it to order ahead, pay, collect points and keep a member card in their phone's wallet. A cafe sees the same customers many times a month, and each visit follows the same steps, so an app fits.
What can an app do that a website cannot?
An app sits on the customer's home screen, one tap away. It can send notifications such as "your order is ready" or "double points this weekend", which a website cannot do as reliably. It can keep people signed in, remember their usual order and put a member card in their phone's wallet.
Each of those features depends on one thing: people installing the app and opening it. A notification only reaches customers who have the app on their phone. If few people install it, you have paid for features almost nobody sees.
How much more does an app cost?
An app costs much more, both to build and to keep running. At Linkify, websites start at $1,500 CAD for a portfolio site, $2,500 CAD for a service business and $4,500 CAD for an online store. A simpler app starts at $8,000 CAD, and a rewards or loyalty app starts at $12,000 CAD.
Time differs too. A website usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to build. An app usually takes 8 to 12 weeks.
The costs do not stop at launch. An app has to be published in both the Apple and Google stores, updated when new phones and operating systems come out, and maintained every year. A website needs care too, but one site covers every device.
That is why we usually suggest getting the website right first. It costs less, it helps every customer, and it shows you whether people want more from you before you spend on an app.
Can you start with the website and add an app later?
Yes, and that is often the better order. A good website brings in customers. Once you can see that they come back often, ask for online ordering or would use rewards, you have a reason to build an app.
Some app-like features can start on the website. Online ordering, bookings and a simple loyalty scheme can all run on a mobile website first. At Linkify, online ordering can be added to a website for about $4,000 CAD. If customers use it a lot, an app can later make it faster for your regulars.
This order also lowers the risk. You find out what customers use before you commit to the larger cost of an app.
What if people cannot find your website in the first place?
A fast mobile website only helps if people reach it. If most new customers find you through Google, search work may matter more than either a redesign or an app. Our SEO service starts at $499 CAD a month.
If you are not sure where your site stands, a Website & SEO audit costs a fixed $750 CAD. It tells you what is slowing your site down on phones and what is keeping it out of search results, so you know what to fix first.
How do you decide?
Ask yourself a few plain questions:
- How often does the same customer buy from you in a month?
- What would they do in an app that they cannot do on your website today?
- Would you promote the app at the counter, on receipts and on social media, so people actually install it?
- Can you afford to keep it updated for years, not just build it once?
If your answers are "rarely", "nothing much", "probably not" and "not really", a better mobile website is the right choice. If your answers point the other way, an app may pay for itself.
If you are still unsure, a short call usually settles it. Book a call and we will tell you which one your business needs, even if the answer is the cheaper one.
